This weekend is our last show for the winter and it's one of our favorites. We'll be vending at Clover Market this Sunday at the Armory which promises to be clear and sunny. Along with lots of new pendants we'll have a full line of cuff links which are a great Valentines treat. We'll also have select women's vintage from the 1950s & 60s. On our travels we picked up some vintage model ships. We always have our personal cutty sark ship out and folks are always quite interested and then sad that it's not for sale. Well we're trying to remedy that situation, considering Mike has quite the eye for ships of all natures.  Hope to see you there!

We'll be at the Passyunk Fall Fest at the Singing Fountain in South Philly. Put on by Nice Things Handmade, it's a great lineup of vendors selling handmade goods along with a fun community Halloween get together. L is excited to join the costume contest this year (there should really be a "Best Elsa" considering the amount of folks who have, I'm sure made that costume choice this year). I'm quite pleased with the way the dress turned out. I was having some doubts when I made the arms, they are not my forte, especially when they are in sequined mesh, but I persevered and succeeded with something that's half decent I'd say! L really liked it and has been singing "Let It Go" and dancing around the house ever since. I'll be there with my pinafore dresses and skirts and Mike has some great new necklaces and painted glass earrings to show off. We hope to see some of you!

On Sunday we'll be in the Woodlands Cemetery (one of our favorite places) for the 3rd Annual All Hallow's Read from noon to 4pm. It's a not too spooky book hunt where everyone exchanges (and hunts for) spooky and fall books to enjoy. Free for everyone, bring a book or not. Thought up by Neil Gaiman my friends organized one in our neighborhood. The Woodlands will also have some "local residents" of the cemetery there to tell you their stories and there will be Weckerly's Ice Cream. too. Disregard the date on the poster (although you could certainly give some books out trick or treating), it's just my favorite one.

We've got our weekend booked with fun, first on Saturday in Haddonfield we'll be at the Fall Festival Booth 53 on Tanner St. We've heard great things about this festival and are excited to try it out. On Sunday we return for our final Clover Market of the season to Chestnut Hill, Booth 43 on Highland Ave. I'll be bringing some choice vintage women's and girls dresses and coats along with the usual handmade. We love Clover Market so and can't wait to do a little fall shopping as well! Hope to see you there....!
]]><![CDATA[First Fridays in Old City]]>Sat, 04 Oct 2014 17:43:49 GMThttp://www.asthecrowfliesandco.com/blog/first-fridays-in-old-cityAll those years back which seem like a lifetime (and actually is for my daughter), when I broke my favorite plate and Mike made some jewelry out of it, the first place we tried to sell it was in Old City at First Friday. I was pregnant at the time and little did we know then what an impact on our lives those necklaces, which sold immediately, would make.
I love First Fridays. I've been going since I was a teenager with my art school friends. Then Old City was a different place, with a lot of galleries and no condos, a little seedy. Exciting for us, we'd sneak wine (they had lots of it and it was free back then) and discuss the finer points of the art with all of our 16 year old insight. I'd go too in my 20s when I came back to town, I knew some of the busker and didn't have to sneak the wine anymore, I noticed the neighborhood changing. Later on when I lived here again and first started dating Mike we would always go, he had gone with his friends when he was younger too. Then he worked at a bar called Sugar Moms between 2nd & 3rd Sts so we go there after seeing all the art and hang out with the cook in the back (the front was always way too crowded). Folks had just started to vend on the street, real art that didn't make it into the galleries and crafts too. Mike thought why not, and started selling the stained glass earrings and necklaces he made.

Old City holds so many memories for us. I love that I can share that and going to First Fridays with our daughter, who last night kept saying how much fun everything was. The streets were packed with all sorts of people, looking at art in the galleries, making and selling art on the street, playing amazing music, it was fun! Weather dependent we'll be there next First Friday in November, maybe we'll see you!

I'm thinking positive thoughts about the weather and am quite exited and a little bit nerve wracked about what tomorrow will bring. We have a truly wonderful line up of vendors, many from previous years and lots of new faces too. Click this link for the whole vendor list. Sunday is the opening of Clover Market in Chestnut Hill. Janet Long puts on an amazingly curated event with a terrific mix of vintage and handmade from the across the tri state area. While GO WEST Craft Fest is a fun and funky mix of the diverse talent of Philly and especially West Philly. Clover Market is like walking into the pages of Living Magazine. I thing I like to do often! We're hoping for 2 days of markets this weekend but if it does happen to rain Mike and I will conquer and divide. He will go to Clover Market and I will stay in West Philly for the GO WEST! rain date. Whatever happens it's sure to be an adventure and we plan on having fun along the way!

Well, I've been away from here for a while on a terrific family vacation. See some of the highlights here on instagram. We're back in full swing now, with brand new and exciting fabrics for me and many new exciting plates for Mike. Our schedule is filled for the month starting Saturday at the Art Star Pop-Up Market. If the weather isn't rainy we'll be there till 3.
We've been extra busy because the GO WEST! Craft Fest is coming up in one week next Saturday, Sept 13th at The Woodlands. We're extremely excited for this event, we've got a terrific group of vendors, a great mixture of new and old. It's a great time to be in The Woodlands, not too chilly yet but with turning leaves and a distinctive fall flavor. Next Weekend will be busy because Sunday is the opening of Clover Market in Chestnut Hill. My two favorite markets back to back! I've got some choice women's vintage I'll be selling too along with everything else at Clover. Sneak peeks of that later next week.

We're still soaking it up before it gets too hot and we pack up and go up north. We're more than half way through our spring Craft Fair season and have been having an amazing time with our own GO WEST! Craft Fest, then Art Star Craft Bazaar and the Clover Markets.  It felt like summer hit with the Trenton Ave Arts Fest & Kinetic Sculpture Derby and we so much fun watching all those bike powered sculptures and drinking too much iced coffee. We're in the midst of 2 weekends (make that 3 due to a weather related cancellation) off and had a leisurely memorial day weekend canoeing on the Schuylkill by Manayunk and barbequing with friends in West Philly. I have no pictures to prove it though! Which almost feels nice... I do have a homeschool volcano experiment from these weeks, creation to destruction, just like the volcano itself.
This coming weekend is packed full of wonderful antique markets. First is the debut of McConkey's Market in Washington's Crossing. We can't wait to be out in Bucks County in the beautiful Washington's Crossing Park surrounded by historic buildings. Being steeped in all that history feels just right. We'll be sure to have some colonial inspired necklaces too!

Sunday is the final Clover Market of the season. I have some of my favorites from the last Chestnut Hill Market below and I'm excited to see what's new this Sunday. I'll be on my own for most of the day (stocked with water, coffee and snacks!) as Mike and E will be at Bartram's Gardens participating in the Tidal River Boat Parade at the Bartram's Community River Fest. For all of you non venders that's a pretty good Sunday plan! Clover Market for the finds then boating and kids crafts at Bartram's. Hope to see you all some time this weekend!

Every morning in the city nature walk that we share with our daughter we notice new and exciting signs that spring is indeed here. The wonder of it from a child's perspective is quite magical and a bit contagious. L and I have been cleaning our back yard and prepping our garden beds, glad to be out in the sunshine. Afternoons find Mike and I deep in the realm of soldering and sewing and prepping our stand for all of the spring vending that we have on our, ahem, plates. Not to mention our own Fest!  Our work on that is in full swing, don't forget to save the date for the GO WEST! Craft Fest, Sat, May 3rd at The Woodlands. We've been interviewed for GRID Magazine and our insert for GO WEST! in that will hit the streets April 17th!
First though, there's all of April vending ahead and we can't wait. A week from today is my favorite antique & craft market in the Philly area, Clover Market. We're thrilled to be back for our 3rd year there, where the debut for spring is in Chestnut Hill.  I'm looking forward to an exciting day of vending and most likely picking up a thing of two... who can resist! If you haven't tried Weckerly's Ice Cream (a GO WEST! favorite) they'll be there too.  It's some of the best around from the sweetest folks!

I'll be debuting my Mama Skirts (although you don't have to have a kid to buy one). They "match" the kid skirts and have been asked about often, so I have high hopes that they will be scooped right up!
